Dee Hudson Owner of the Blue Goose & Red Dog Tavern’s in Port Orchard, Washington, hosted the 2007 Washington State Championships (WSC). Because of the difficulties in running 2 tournaments in 2 different locations, three tournament directors were needed (Bill Walker, Mike Waters, & Wayne Demick). These guys did such a good job we could use their expertise in 2008. The tournament was a success thanks to the hard work and support of the shuffleboard community.
In early 2006, after three years without a State Tournament, Dean Johnson and Mel Hohn revived the tournament with the following objectives: (1) To carry on a tradition. (2) To hold the tournament in different locations each year. (3) To help promote the game by creating the best tournament in Washington. This year was better than last, and next year will be better than this. To add legitimacy to the tournament a WSC Committee was formed this year to oversee future tournament and raise money. Committee members are: Mike Waters, Joe Paszkowski, Vern Gonzales, Rick Shaw, Carolyn Floyd, & Mel Hohn. The Committee decided that the 2008 State Tournament will be held in Skagit County. The three establishments hosting the tournament will be the Eagles, Gene’s Tavern, and Bellow’s. The committee has decided that the WSC should be held the first week in December, the same time frame as the past two years, hoping to make this a permanent date on the Washington State Calendar. The committee also decided that Washington State Champions should earn distinctive Jacket so everyone knows they are our Champions.
Olympic Shuffleboard, the Pacific Northwest Sportsmanship Committee, and the Dwayne Dibley Foundation sponsored the 2007 WSC. We couldn’t have done it without you. Olympic Shuffleboard has agreed to sponsor the 2008 WSC by providing a new set of weights to be raffled off to raise money, and by agreeing to pay the entry fee for the doubles champions in both divisions for the doubles at the 2009 PNSE at Little Creek Casino.
Additionally, the WSC Committee would like to thank our host Dee Hudson for providing first rate facilities and boards, the players for supporting the tournament, the Tournament Directors for all their hard work, Linda Walker and all the people who brought food providing a great feast, and all the people who worked so hard behind the scene pulling it all together.
