SHELTON, Wash. — Jim Tribble and Don “Mitch” Mitchell were crowned champions of the 26th annual Masters Tournament at the Fir Cone Tavern on Sunday. Mitchell, a previous champion, and Tribble downed 17 other teams to get their names engraved on the huge trophy that goes with prize and auction money. Mitchell and Tribble, both of Olympia, downed Gary George, Tacoma, and Jeff Kersting, Shelton, in the championship match.
George-Kersting were trying for a Hood Canal sweep after winning the Whistling Oyster Grand Masters in August. Darroll Nelson, of Cheshire, Ore., and Al Pease, Tacoma, finished third.
Loren Lampley, Shelton, made a successful return to tournament competition after more than two years away, teaming with another Shelton player, Nels Anderson, to finish fourth
Tying for fifth and sixth were Bob Hurst, Shelton, and Gordie Smith, Vancouver, BC, Mike Keevil, Tacoma, and Kenny Simmons, Longview. Fir Cone owner Mel Hohn teamed with Canada’s Patty Preymak to win the Friday draw partner event.
