The Forest Festival is a celebration of a way of life that may be gone now, but in it’s day paved the way for future generations. It is a way of paying respect to the men and women who risk it all to build towns like Shelton all across this great nation. It is also a time to have fun with parades, clowns, car shows, and of course, shuffleboard. The locals have a deep-seated belief that shuffleboard was invented in Shelton. This, of course, is not true. But, you be the one to convince a local Sheltonite. This small shuffleboard town believes that the “Big Bang Theory” is someone throwing a weight really hard. This is a town that really believes in shuffleboard. This belief comes from the fact that so many great players come from Shelton: Dick Doak, Loren Lampley, Nels Anderson, Al Green, Grant Manning, and Vern Gonzales. Billy Mays even spent some time playing in Shelton. I believe he might even have won a couple Friday Night Draws.
Friday night there was a single elimination A-B Draw that was won by Mike Jewett & Mel Hohn. The Friday night event is intended as a warm up or, if you will, a chance to learn the boards. Winning this event doesn’t carry much prestige, but it usually pays for the weekend.
Of course, winning the Forest Festival pays for a lot more than the weekend and carries quite a lot of prestige. This years Forest Festival Champions are Clark Kenny & Frank Floyd. This is Frank’s first tournament win and a day he won’t soon forget. Second place went to Grant Manning & Carolyn Floyd. Mike Waters & Mike Jewett took third place money. These winners and all the players are happy to have a place that has continued the tradition of shuffleboard.
Once again Ernie Montoya, Owner of Ernie’s Bar & Grill, put on a top-notch show. The boards played great, the frosty cold adult beverages were frosty cold, and the food was excellent. Ernie always appreciates the support for his tournaments and is always striving to make improvements for the next tournament.
The next tournament at Ernie’s Bar & Grill will be July 17 – 19, 2009. This tournament will also be an A-B Draw. For more information on this tournament or for reservations call Ernie at 360-426-2221 or Mel Hohn at 360-438-0401
