Central Point, OR – The doubles team of Sunny Valley’s Bud Spier and Springfield visitor John Edwards captured the annual A/B “Bring Partner” Double’s tournament at the Tolo Tavern in Central Point, Oregon. The August 5-7 tournament attracted 11 competitive teams to the friendly tavern in the southern part of the state.
Spier and Edwards won out the hard way by coming back from an early loss in the event to defeat the then undefeated team of Springfield’s Al Hudson and Coos Bay’s Joe Cupp. The tournament champions’ double dipped Hudson and Cupp in two close matches for the win late Sunday. Along the way Spier and Edwards knocked off the third place father and son team of John and Jeff King in the finals of the loser’s bracket.
Spier had a good weekend as he and partner John King won the opening Friday night draw event in front of a packed house at the Tolo. On Saturday, August 6, the traditional sponsor sale for the A/B Doubles began at 11 a.m. and was followed later in the day with a BBQ for all players and patrons. Tournament play began immediately following the auction.
Medford’s John King handled the auction and then the bracketing duties for the event. Tolo Tavern owner Timi Kale was the tournament director.
The event featured a best two out of three format in both the winner and loser’s brackets and was played on the house’s three fast shuffleboards. An entry fee of $20 per player was charged as the top two teams used a 60/40 split of the entry and sponsor pool money.
Tolo tavern owner Timi Kale thanked all of the players who supported this year’s event as well as the bartenders, waitresses and volunteers who helped make the tournament a success.
