The 11th Annual Sweetheart Tournament was held recently in St. Louis, Missouri on February 11, 2006 at Liz’s Place. The established tradition of this tournament was begun by our dearly departed friend, shuffleboard player and promoter, and Missouri Shuffleboard Association Hall Of Fame inductee, Bill “Thunder” Hill. This tournament has been organized and run by several local people since Bill’s passing in December, 2003. This year it was my honor to carry on that tradition. This year also brought the inclusion of several newer shuffleboard players, both as couples and as teammates with some more seasoned players. We are grateful for their participation and encourage all those newer players to continue to play and hone their skills to make our local shuffleboard community a stronger and more vibrant community.
Taking Third Place in this year’s tournament was the team of Mary Curtis and Wayne Cupp. After losing their first game in the opening round, Mary and Wayne climbed back up through the loser’s bracket with steady and consistent play. In one of their final games in the loser’s bracket May and Wayne defeated some strong competitors, Jill and Larry Romay, in a tight 15-14 game, assuring them to place in this tournament. They lost their next game, but still garnered their third place honors. Congratulations, Mary and Wayne.
Second Place honors went to the tough shooting team of Judy Lee and ‘Super’ Sam. They both remained in the winner’s bracket to become the only other undefeated team of the tournament. After their first loss, they went on to defeat Mary and Wayne in the finals of the loser’s bracket, but were no match for the remaining undefeated team. Their good play ended up rewarding them with their second place finish. Congratulations, Judy and Super Sam.
First Place Honors went to the fine shooting match-up of Rhonda Proffer and Chuck Muehlhauser. Rhonda and Chuck worked through the winner’s bracket ending up as the only undefeated team of the tournament. Their good shooting and consistent play sealed their place as the champions of this tournament. Congratulations to Rhonda and chuck for their First Place Honors.
I would like to thank a trio of Romays, Jerry & Lisa and Jill, along with Judy Lee for their help with tournament duties and for helping out with the food. Thank you all, your help was greatly appreciated and made this yet another fun and successful tournament.
